Florida PIP/PD Insurance
Florida PIP/PD Insurance Information
Every driver registering a car in Florida is required to maintain a minimum automobile insurance policy which includes PIP (Personal Injury Protection). This coverage pays benefits after an accident regardless of fault, to the policyholder and household residents for their bodily injuries. There are several PIP options to choose from which can lower your car insurance quote.
The required limits for each individual is $10,00 and is paid out for 80% of medical related costs, 60% for missed work, and $5,000 in case of a fatality. The named insured or policyholder may elect a deductible of 250, 500, or 1,000 dollars. An option for lost wages can either be included or left off. The deductible and missed work options can be applied to the policyholder only or to all the household residents. Anytime coverage is left out or reduced the rate quote is lower.
An excellent additional coverage to consider on your Florida car insurance policy is Bodily Injury Liability (BI). This coverage pays after an at fault accident for other persons injured and not to the policyholder or their household residents. Some companies will not sell a policy with PIP unless there is also BI. Most companies will place a risk or applicant into a better tier with lower rates when BI is included. Sometimes adding coverage can actually lower the overall cost of a policy.
Most insurance agents do not go over all the available choices when it comes to PIP when a potential applicant is receiving a quote. Knowing about these options is important when considering your car insurance. Keep in mind that reducing coverage does not always mean lower rates and it can leave you unprotected.
