What is FR-44 Insurance?

If you’ve had a DUI in Florida, the state requires you to carry something called FR-44 insurance. Basically, it’s proof that you’re carrying higher liability limits than a standard policy.

Most people (and honestly, even a lot of agents) don’t fully understand FR-44. That’s where I come in-I’ve been helping Florida drivers with FR-44 policies since the law went into effect back in 2008. My goal is simple: get you back on the road quickly, with the right coverage, at the best rate possible.

Recent Updates You Should Know

Law Change (Oct 1, 2023): Florida dropped the rule that FR-44 policies had to be
“non-cancellable.” That means companies can now offer monthly payment plans instead of forcing you to pay in full upfront.

Progressive Led the Way (Apr 26, 2024): Progressive was the first big insurer to roll out monthly FR-44 payment options and allow drivers to add an FR-44 to an existing policy.

Now More Options: Other companies have followed, so you’ve got choices when it
comes to setting up your FR-44 coverage.

Heads up: The state (not your insurance company) will let you know when your FR-44 requirement ends.

Why FR-44 Insurance Isn't Always as Pricey as You Think

A lot of drivers assume FR-44 means sky-high rates-but that’s not always the case.

What Kinds of Policies Qualify?

You don’t always need a regular car policy to meet the FR-44 requirement. You can file with:

A standard auto insurance policy

A non-owner policy (if you don’t own a car)

A recreational vehicle policy

The only catch: vehicles with fewer than 4 wheels (like motorcycles) don't qualify for FR-44 because they don't carry PIP coverage.

Getting Your License Back

Here’s what the process usually looks like:

Watch Out for Bad Info Online

If you’ve been Googling FR-44, you’ve probably noticed a ton of confusing and often flat-out wrong information. For example, many sites claim State Farm offers FR-44 filings in Florida-they don’t. In fact, they won’t even insure drivers with a DUI.

That’s why working with an experienced agent matters. I’ve been doing this since the law started, and I know which companies actually offer FR-44, which ones don’t, and how to set things up so you’re not overpaying.
