It previously discussed Progressive's potential (and later confirmed) excess profits credit for eligible Florida auto insurance policyholders tied to the 2023–2025 accident years. For the latest information on this topic, see the author's updated post: Progressive Confirms Excess Profits Credits for Florida Auto Policyholders in 2026. Update (January 2026): Earlier this year, I shared that Progressive may issue excess profits refunds to eligible Florida auto insurance policyholders in 2026. That update has now moved from possible to confirmed. Progressive has announced it will issue excess profits credits tied to the 2023–2025 accident years, with credits beginning to roll out in 2026. While this isn’t a discount or promotional rebate, it does affect how Florida drivers should think about timing and eligibility. For additional context, see my update on Progressive’s Florida excess profits credit.
Progressive recently announced that it may return excess profits to eligible Florida auto insurance policyholders in 2026. This possible refund comes after a year of favorable market conditions, fewer claims, and key legislative reforms that helped stabilize the state’s auto insurance market. The company stated on October 15, 2025, that it has already reduced rates for Florida drivers twice in the past year, yet it may still exceed the profit limit allowed under Florida law. When that happens, state law requires insurers to return the excess profit to customers in the form of a rebate.
If Progressive insurance company confirms that it has gone over that threshold, refunds will be distributed to eligible policyholders sometime in 2026. According to the company, this rebate process will not affect agent commissions or existing policy rates. For many Florida drivers, this announcement is a welcome sign that real savings could finally be on the horizon after years of volatility in the state’s auto insurance market.
Just this past week, one of my longtime clients was preparing to renew her Progressive policy in November. I found her a slightly better rate with GEICO — about $100 in savings for the same coverage — and she was ready to switch. But when we started talking about the possible Progressive rebate, I explained that to qualify, she’d need to have an active Progressive policy by the end of the year. If she switched too soon, she could miss out.
I told her, “We don’t know how much the rebate will be, and a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. So maybe we should switch now and save that money while it’s right in front of us.”
She laughed and said, “Yeah, but I don’t want to miss out on free money.” Then she thought about it for a moment and said, “What if we just wait until January?”
I told her, “Yes, that makes sense. You can cancel mid-term, there’s no penalty, and you’ll receive a refund for any unused portion. That way, you can still qualify for the rebate and start saving with GEICO afterward.”
She was absolutely right — and that’s the kind of real-world decision Florida drivers are facing right now.
If you’re insured with Progressive, it might make sense to stay active through the end of 2025 just to see if the rebate comes through. At the same time, it’s smart to keep comparing quotes, because even a generous rebate might not outweigh the long-term savings from switching to a lower rate. Every driver’s situation is unique, and that’s where an experienced independent agent can help you weigh your options and make the most informed choice.
